Obamacare: docs and pharmacies leaving practices. Period.

Posted on Updated on

Thousands of doctors are walking away from the Obamacare exchange in a large-scale mutiny over the government’s reimbursement rates. In California, where 70% of the 104,000 physicians are refusing to participate in ObamaCare, practices stand to lose millions of dollars under the state’s bargain basement insurance rates.

The Washington Examiner‘s Richard Pollack broke it down this way. “In other states, doctors receive between $500 to $700 to perform a tonsillectomy. In California [under the state exchange], they get $160.”

Pharmacists are not ebing spared. Under Medi-Cal’s lastest cost-cutting scheme, reimbursements will be lowered about 10% across the board even though pharmacy drug costs continue their sometimes double digit inflation rates.

In order to create money to subsidize ObamaCare, Democrats have massively cut Medicare (in California Medical) reimbursements.  This is why good doctors and hospital limit Medicare patients, doctors are retiring early, and the best of doctors opt out leaving the system to doctors that need Medicare patients.

Now we are finding out that needed drugs will also be cut to provide millions with free health care, while tens of millions lose needed care and medicines.  When this policy is fully implemented Medicare patients will have to go further to find pharmacies willing to lose money on every drug sale to a Medicare covered patient.  Some will do without—and die—thanks to Barack Obama the real goal of ObamaCare, to ration health care. that’s what happens in countries with socialized medicine: soon reality and rationing follow.

““There’s a hard cost — the medication the pharmacist has to provide,” Roth said. Under the proposed cut, they’ll be paid 10% less for drugs, but the prices pharmacies pay to buy the drugs will not change, in fact they rise every year, sometimes with double digit inflation as is happening with high cost, high touch specialty drugs for conditions like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

With a margin of 2-4% now, the cuts will made the business “upside down from the get go,” he said.” Pharmacies will likely have to stop accepting Medi-Cal patients and more stores will also be shuttering their business. Not exactly the “unfettered capitalism” Pope Francis bemoaned in his recent apostolic exhortation Evangelium Gaudii.

This doesn’t begin to address the issue of the HHS diktat and how many pharmacists and other health professionals be Obamacare refuseniks and face either fines or jail time.
