A North Carolina Roman Catholic school is holding a meeting today to address the concerns of parents and students who say they are outraged about remarks a visiting nun made criticizing homosexuality, divorce, and sex outside of marriage during a recent speech.
Dominican Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, who often speaks to high school and college-age students on matters of sexuality, gave an hour-long presentation to students at Charlotte Catholic High School on March 21 called “Masculinity and Femininity: Difference and Gift.” The topic was known in advance by the school.
School officials told the Catholic News Herald she spent about half her allotted time discussing homosexuality, blaming its rising influence in part on fatherless homes created by divorce and extramarital sex.
Sister Laurel is a member of the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia, often called the Nashville Dominicans, which is an order known for its orthodoxy and fidelity to the Magisterium.
Although the Catholic Church has always held both homosexual behavior and sex outside of marriage to be gravely sinful, students and parents at the Catholic school reacted to her remarks with shock and anger, launching both an online petition and a letter-writing campaign calling the sister’s words “offensive and unnecessarily derogatory.” Was it unspoken anti-Asian racism that sparked this pouring out of bile and venom?
Sr Jane Dominic and her congregation have pro-actively cancelled a planned talk at a May meeting in Ashville, NC for the same diocese and student body.
Inquiries to the school were met with derision from at least one of its teacher representatives. A well known pro-life and devout Catholic doctor from Ohio wrote asking about the situation and the irrational reply to Sr Jane Dominic by the students, a number of parents and faculty. The exchange is below and the reader can judge for themselves that the school respondent, Lauren Lawler, whose Lindedin.com profile lists her as a public school educator, although she has an email account via Charlotte Catholic High.
The same profile states she is a subsitute teacher at St Agnes High School and
“I am a Junior and Senior Religious Studies Teacher. I teach Social Justice, Sacraments, Ecumenism and World Religions, and Christian Lifestyles. I am the moderator of the Invisible Chidlren [sic] club. I am on the committee for books in our schools. I am also a co-chair for the Habitat for Humanities. I help out with Kairos and other Ministry related options. I help out with retreats and Religious Inservices.”
Sounds like she has all the liberal modernist “catholic” boxes checked.
Here’s the exchange ESH alluded to above:
Begin forwarded message:
Another respondent who knows Dr D, a board certified pediatrician of 40 yrs, sent a reply to the email blocking substitute teacher Lauren:
Hello Mrs Lauren:I saw your rude and disrespectful email back to Dr D, who is a well known and faithful Catholic pediatrician and who does NOT have his own “flock”, not just a “Mr D”. When a “Catholic” school like yours becomes a national scandal and news item, it becomes the business and affects all loyal Catholics scandalized by what occurred there during Sr Jane Dominic’s talk. That many in your school, including students in formation, stiff necked refuse to submit to the unchanging teachings of Christ and all the popes that touched on this subject, is shocking and continues to scandalize other faithful all over the US and the world.Block emails if you want, the truth will continue to expose those who violate the teachings against the perverse evil of sodomy and its fake “marriage” promoted by political “gay” groups and individuals.I am also copying your ordinary, Bishop Jugis, on this memo and will be keeping other loyal Catholics apprised of the dreadful and disrespectful manner your crowd recently visited on a guest you invited to speak, Sr Jane Dominic, OP.
And, it is Dr. K, as I earned it.
ESH Bottom line: this substitute teach and many of her students and their NextGen parents are more interested in refusing communion with the unchanging Magisterial doctrines of Christ and His One True Church, and cow-towing to sodomite perverts who incorrectly use the sewer end of the alimentary canal, and showing disrepect and vilification for a religious sister [NB: nuns are in cloistered situations, sisters are women religious outside a cloister] who has shown fidelity to those same teachings and her permanent vows. Rather they make a farce of the grace-filled Sacrament of Marriage, sealed for eternity in its nature in the Genesis account of our first parents.
